Anomie Enemy
In 4th grade Dicky Brucks was given a recorder and taught to play (badly) by a crotchety old woman with a beard and an unsightly goiter. 12 years later, at a little house by the Seabright Brewery in Santa Cruz, something magical happened. A jam session that lasted a full five hours. Everyone contributed. Brainwaves harmonized, and everyone present collectively creamed their pants.

Dicky, with his strange aptitude for an awkward celtic/tribal style improvisation, and Roberto, armed with a djimbe and a golden tongue, went on an epic quest to encourage jam sessions everywhere. Their vision is that of building community through music. Everyone is welcome to contribute. And if you live in Santa Cruz, you should come to one of our "Gatherings" - Food, Drink, Dancing, Music, Love, and Community. These gatherings are the essence of what we're trying to do musically. This music is about the invigorating experience of collective creation, of tapping into the collective unconscious that unites us all, and working together to make something truly beautiful.

These songs are our songs. They are our humanity. The process is about community. The purpose is a greater understanding of human collectivity.

The name Anomie Enemy is something Dicky thought up. He's studying sociology at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The term "anomie" was coined by Emile Durkheim to describe an anomalous state of alienation and normlessness that undermines social solidarity. Dicky takes anomie to be pretty much the everyday experience of a human being in the insidiously individualistic capitalist post-industrial society, and as such the name "Anomie Enemy" comes from the desire to destroy anomie, to build community, to create and inspire that sense of our shared humanity that is constantly under attack in our panoptic society.

/end rant.
